"Don't Ever Let Life Beat You"

Back when I was doing govt. contract work in Iraq, I went through a period where I was getting my cardio workouts (and kick-ass workouts at that!) in at lunchtime. Well the company I work for decided that the little gym I go to was no longer necessary, and the equipment would be better served being sent to another site.

It was pretty maddening, really. One day, I had gotten a GREAT workout in on the Concept 2 Rowser and illiptical trainer - all in my "MFD" (Medium Fast Distance) style of of training. Everything seemed as per normal. The next day at lunchtime, I was walking back to my living container to change for my workout. There was a big trailer in front of the gym, and I couldn't help but laugh to myself how messed up it would be if I changed clothes, went into the gym, and the place be empty, with all the equipment having been loaded into the trailer.

Then I changed clothes and actually went into the gym.....

NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

The place was friggin' empty.

To say I was hot under the collar would be a slight understatement. The working conditions doing govt. contract work in Iraq were pretty lousy - it was absurdly hot, you work 80-90 hours and 7 days/week, the food was lousy, you never get to see your friends and family...the main thing that kept me sane was getting my daily cardio workouts in.

And now I can't even do that.

There was another gym on the camp, but for reasons that aren't really worth completely getting into here, it was such a pain to use, that it really wasn't worth it. If I did, either the place was crazy crowded, or if I went during the day (if my boss would even let me), that meant working later at night...meaning I wasn't getting off until probably 9:00 or 10:00 pm each night. (Normal quitting time was 7:30-8:00 pm.)

And running still was never a really good option, either. First, there was always so much sand in the air, that heavy breathing outside was never a good idea unless it was necessary. Then, our "uniform posture" kept being altered, meaning that one day everything would be "normal", and the next, you might be madated to wear a bullet-proof vest and helmet while outdoors. Not exactly conducive to going for a run.

So now what do I do?

Priority #1 was getting my mind right. I was gonna figure out a way to win. Nothing had ever beat me before, and I sure wasn't gonna lose now.

What could I do for my cardio workouts? I wanted to not only get in some good cardio conditioning, but of course wanted to keep my work capacity at a decent level, and maintain my strength and power endurance.

I could always do bodyweight exercises in circuits – burpees, different kinds of pushups, core work, different kinds of jumps, etc. I did that for a few days, and it worked great. Only I knew I had to figure out a way to lift weights.

I ended up getting my hands on three dumbbells - a pair of 50s, and one 60-pounder that I could take back to my living container to use. I was in business.

I was now creating cardio workouts that involved all kinds of circuits that involved not only the bodyweight exercises I mentioned above, but also various dumbbell movement - snatches, clean and presses, swings, rows, and a lot more.

Getting my diet in check and working my ass off over about a 2.5 month period, I lost roughly 40 lbs, added some size to my upper arms, got great cardio workouts, kept my strength/power and muscular conditioning high, and even managed to increase my work capactiy. All with just bodyweight movements, 3 dumbbells, and roughly 10 square feet of space.

What I’m trying to get at is this – sometimes life throws you a curve ball. When it does, you can either let it keep you down, or you can take your lumps, and come back stronger. It’s kind of like the line from “Rocky Balboa”:

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!"

Don't EVER let life beat you.

Train Hard, Rest Hard, Play Hard.

"As a trainer and coach myself, I know not only what works but what people
will actually do. There is an art and science to physical change and peak
performance. Matt Wiggins program does it all. It is fast, effective and you will feel like a complete bad ass when you're done. This is the type of training that that isn't all show and no go...it will create both the show and the go! Scientific, Fun, and Manly. Love it!"

"Not just for the guys! The thing I like about Matt’s workout is that it’s simple. That doesn’t mean it’s not hard! It’s intense! It makes you feel like you’ve worked. And if you work at it, you’ll get results. I like the format and the progressions each week. Having done the workout myself and tested it on both my male and female clients, I can say it’s not a workout that’s just for guys. I really encourage women to give it a go, as much as I encourage guys. The fact that you need minimal equipment and only a small area in which to work really eliminates any excuse not to give it a go!"

"First thing that I've got to say is that I lost 5 pounds in the first 1.5 weeks of your program...that's definately the workout I would follow before my official fight...the combination of posterior and anterior chain exercises various other sportsmen would find useful because of the amount of cleans and pushes combined with anaerobic circuits."

"...after 2 weeks of the cardio program, the biggest thing that I’ve noticed is that my resting heartbeat is down about 3 beats per minutes. I’m down a couple of pounds as well. My energy level appears to be higher (I’ve got twin 4 year olds, so keeping my energy level high is very important)...At 43 years old I’m not concerned with being the biggest or the strongest, just being in the best overall athlete I can be."

"I have been a loyal customer of Wiggy's for 2 years now, and I’m so confident in anything that Wiggy puts out, that I will guarantee you it will work. I’m in my early 30’s and can honestly say I’m in the best shape of my life and getting better. The new "Working Class Cardio Workout" is AWESOME. If you want to get into real shape then look no further. Like any workout you will only get what you put into it. No, it’s not easy but you wouldn’t be reading this if you wanted to look like everyone else at the gym. Like Wiggy always says “Train Hard, Rest Hard, Play Hard”. So pick it up, do what he says and you to will look better, feel better, and believe in him like I do. God bless and good luck."

"I'm Aaron's Bonafede little brother, and we have been devout followers of your amazing strength and conditioning programs for at least two years. They truly have transformed my body into a work horse of a machine. I am a Firefighter who also does some Jiu Jitsu on the side. I have been asked/told by more than one person, 'How are you so strong?' or 'Do you ever get tired?' With the 'cardio workout' theme I decided to keep the rest (wait there is no time to rest between all of those wood choppers) to a minimum. By the time I was finished with the first workout, I had soaked through a shirt and had to answer more questions then normal as to what exactly I was doing. I knew it was another winner. I am confident this program will take anybody's cardio and strength to the next level and beyond. Thanks again for new ass kicking programs."
