"Why Your Cardio Workouts Need Focus"

There is a trend with many workouts in the fitness industry that seems to be more and more popular - a program that “does it all.”

It should be pretty common knowledge by now that there is no “magic program.” (Which I've been saying for as long as I've been writing articles in the fitness/strength & conditioning world). There is no such thing as a program that will take 6 inches off your waist in a month, add 75 lbs. to your bench press in 6 weeks, or let you drop 50 lbs. in 60 days. Ain't just gonna happen.

However, something I’m seeing a lot of anymore isn't necessarily the “magic program”, but rather the workout program that “does it all.” This kind of workout program is the one that will adds a ton of weight to your maximum lifts, shoots your muscular and strength-endurance through the roof, and gives you cardio and "wind" that lets you work your butt off all day long with never getting tired.

I hate to break it to you, but if you want a workout program that “does it all,” then you're gonna be looking for quite a while. Just like there's no such thing as a "magic program", there's no program that "does it all", either.

There are many workout programs these days that promise to do virtually everything all at once – and that’s a load of crap. No one single program will increase your maximum strength, maximal power, strength-endurance, power-endurance, cardiovascular conditioning, muscular conditioning, and more all at once. Sorry, but it just doesn't work that way. You can, however, do programs that focus on increasing on or two of these things, while doing enough work on the rest to maintain them.

That is how you should pick and design your cardio workouts. Determine what your major weak points are – and put together workouts that address those weaknesses. However, the one thing to keep in mind is that there are many ways you tackle the same problem. For example, for many years, many otherwise uninitiated trainees think that "cardio" is simply hopping on the treadmill or other favorite cardio machine at their gym. In more recent times, interval training for cardio workouts has become more in vogue, and folks think that is the way to train your cardio.

However, there are many other ways to accomplish the same thing, while targeting other physical qualities.

For example, you could do bodyweight circuits or dumbbell complexes. This would be not only a great way to get in a good cardio workout, but you could also train other endurance qualities (strength, power, muscular, etc.) as well as increase your work capacity. But as good as that sounds, and as much good that it'll do you, it still won't be a "be all, end all" workout.

This kind of program won't do much in the way of increasing your maximum strength or power. It might allow you to keep those levels constant, but don't think you're gonna add any weight to your max bench press. Is it a good cardio workout? Sure. A good maximal strength workout? Not really.

I’ve said this before, but there are no real effective quasi “all-encompassing” programs that supposedly do everything. Instead, pick a program that brings up some weak points while maintaining everything else. Then pick another to bring up other weak points, while maintaining everything else. Keep rotating this through your different weak points, until all your weak points have been raised, and you are at a higher level overall.

As for these programs (and there are some VERY popular ones out there – I’m not naming any names, but look around – you’ll find them) that promise to make you strong as a powerlifter, as powerful as an Olympic lifter, as fast as a sprinter, etc., well….you know the old saying about “If they say it’s too good to be true, then it probably is.”

Train Hard, Rest Hard, Play Hard.

cardio cafe cardio workout graphic"Not just for the guys! The thing I like about Matt’s workout is that it’s simple. That doesn’t mean it’s not hard! It’s intense! It makes you feel like you’ve worked. And if you work at it, you’ll get results. I like the format and the progressions each week. Having done the workout myself and tested it on both my male and female clients, I can say it’s not a workout that’s just for guys. I really encourage women to give it a go, as much as I encourage guys. The fact that you need minimal equipment and only a small area in which to work really eliminates any excuse not to give it a go!"

nikolay cardio workout logo"First thing that I've got to say is that I lost 5 pounds in the first 1.5 weeks of your program...that's definately the workout I would follow before my official fight...the combination of posterior and anterior chain exercises various other sportsmen would find useful because of the amount of cleans and pushes combined with anaerobic circuits."

eklof cardio workout picture"...after 2 weeks of the cardio program, the biggest thing that I’ve noticed is that my resting heartbeat is down about 3 beats per minutes. I’m down a couple of pounds as well. My energy level appears to be higher (I’ve got twin 4 year olds, so keeping my energy level high is very important)...At 43 years old I’m not concerned with being the biggest or the strongest, just being in the best overall athlete I can be."

"I have been a loyal customer of Wiggy's for 2 years now, and I’m so confident in anything that Wiggy puts out, that I will guarantee you it will work. I’m in my early 30’s and can honestly say I’m in the best shape of my life and getting better. The new "Working Class Cardio Workout" is AWESOME. If you want to get into real shape then look no further. Like any workout you will only get what you put into it. No, it’s not easy but you wouldn’t be reading this if you wanted to look like everyone else at the gym. Like Wiggy always says “Train Hard, Rest Hard, Play Hard”. So pick it up, do what he says and you to will look better, feel better, and believe in him like I do. God bless and good luck."

"I'm Aaron's Bonafede little brother, and we have been devout followers of your amazing strength and conditioning programs for at least two years. They truly have transformed my body into a work horse of a machine. I am a Firefighter who also does some Jiu Jitsu on the side. I have been asked/told by more than one person, 'How are you so strong?' or 'Do you ever get tired?' With the 'cardio workout' theme I decided to keep the rest (wait there is no time to rest between all of those wood choppers) to a minimum. By the time I was finished with the first workout, I had soaked through a shirt and had to answer more questions then normal as to what exactly I was doing. I knew it was another winner. I am confident this program will take anybody's cardio and strength to the next level and beyond. Thanks again for new ass kicking programs."
