"What Bulgarian Coaches Can Teach You About Your Cardio Workouts"

I used to really follow the professional bodybuilding scene back in the late '90s. Back then, if you opened up any of the magazines, you'd likely see and add for the "Serious Growth" books. These were the programs by Leo Costa, Jr., Dr. R.L. Horine, and later on even the "Golden Eagle" Tom Platz. By the time they were done, there were some 4+ books in all, and the programs were (supposedly) based on training methods Costa had learned from Bulgarian Olympic lifting coaches. Costa had then (again, supposedly) applied those principles to bodybuilding.

I have no idea how true the claim that these programs were inspired by Bulgarian Olympic lifting principles were, but nonetheless, there was some really good info in these books.

One of the main principles that the books centered on (and that Costa had learned from the Bulgarian coaches) was that the "Body Becomes Its Function." If you trained enough to perform a certain function, the body could almost "become" that function.

Or, in other words, whatever you spend the most time training, is what you become better at. Pretty simple idea, huh? You'd think so, but many trainees still seem to miss the mark.

You're not gonna get bigger arms, unless you're on a program to build bigger arms. If you want to jump higher, then you'd better train to jump higher. If you need to do more pullups, then, you need to do pullups. Don't do rows. Don't do pulldowns. Don't do shrugs, or any other exercise. Do pullups!

After all, you're not going to get better at one thing by training another thing.

This basic premise should be the driving force behind how you design all your workouts. If you're doing cardio workouts, then you need to be doing some sort of aerobic and anaerobic endurance training. This can be in the form of long distance training, interval training, or barbell, dumbbell, or bodyweight circuits.

Outside goals like putting XX pounds on your bench press, performing a handstand, building bigger arms, etc. are all fine and well to have. But all of them are outside the realm of what you would accomplish with your cardio workouts. Cardio workouts will allow you to improve your conditioning, improve your wind, increase your work capacity, drop bodyfat, etc. All these other goals outside of your main driving force will just slow down your progress to your main goals. Then you'll either accomplish your main goals much more slowly, or worse yet, you won't end up accomplishing anything.

I've been training a guy off-and-on for close to a year now. He's actually taining to become a professional wrestler, and he emailed me about a bodybuilding program he wanted my opinion on.

I told him it was a decent program - and it was - for getting big and strong. But from an athletic point of view (and say what you want - professional wrestlers these days are athletes!), it left a whole lot to be desired. If he just wanted to have big "gunz", it'd work. But he's likely be a clod in the ring.

He responded telling me that he know exactly what I meant. He'd gone through a phase where he was doing the program, and though he was bigger, he always felt slow and sluggish. Every time he tried to move around the ring, he looked like clumsy oaf. However, now that he's on my one my programs that centers on producing power and strength/power-endurance), he's strong as he's ever been, feels light on his feet, has good control over his body, and has never moved around the ring better.

And this was all because the "body became its function." When he trained like a bodybuilder, his body became a bodybuilder's body. Now that he's training like an athlete, he has an athlete's body, with the performance to match.

If your goals are cardio-based, then make sure you're doing cardio training. Your body will then gravitate that direction, as it will "become its function".

Train Hard, Rest Hard, Play Hard.
