“I Don’t Care How Strong I Am”

Written by Wiggy on August 13, 2010 – 4:38 pm -

When I was in college, I worked for the athletic dept, all four years. Part of what I used to do was watch the university weight room. You know – check IDs, clean up, give guys a spot…that sorta thing.

Well, as you can imagine, there were a whole host of different little cliques of people that would come in. There were the bodybuilder wannabes, the guys wanting to be super-strong, the dudes that lifted just to lift, the girls who used to come in wearing short shorts and sports bras to get attention from the dudes (too bad they were butt-ugly, though… *shrug*).

There were two dudes that used to come in and train together all the time. Nice enough guys – we all got along well enough. They were a little older than me at the time, and had the whole “Maxim” kinda vibe going.

They cared about how they looked, what kinda cologne was the best, designer-label jeans, hair care products…these dudes were metrosexual before there even was metrosexual.

(Personally, I thought it was all pansy-ass and kinda fairy-like, but like I said, they were cool enough dudes, and that’s all I really cared about. They didn’t try to ‘convert’ me, nor I them.)

One night, one of the dudes comes in to work out by himself, as evidently his buddy had to study or something, so I ended up giving him a spot. Thought it was kinda odd, really, as he was asking for a spot on some seated DB overhead presses…and he was using 45 lbs. DBs.

And this dude was prolly about 6′ tall, and weighed a solid 200 lbs. or so. He had decent muscle size, and a good bone structure. He shoulda been pushing A LOT more weight than that.

Anyway, after a set or two, I ask him if he wants to go up, and he just shook his head. He was concentrating on his workout, which was cool w/me, so I didn’t ask again. I just gave him a spot.

When he was done, he came up to me and we bullshitted for a bit. Not being able to resist myself, I asked him again why he hadn’t used more weight. He coulda easily been putting up 60s or 65s with good form.

He proceeds to go on this diatribe about using constant tension, and always feeling the muscle, and controlled movement, yadda yadda. But the thing that opened my eyes was when he said, “I don’t care how strong I am”.

Uhhhhh….what? Say that again…

He then goes on about how all he wants to do is look good so he can bang hot chicks. There wasn’t any other purpose to his working out than that.

Now, I can respect that and all, but c’mon…you don’t even wanna be able to back up what you look like you can do? And I asked him, b/c he had a decent-enough build, what are you gonna do when somebody sees your physique – essentially “talking the talk” – and then expects you to be able to “walk the walk”?

I don’t remember what he said, but he clearly wasn’t worried.

About two weeks later, I saw him in the weight room again, and he was hitting on one of the sports bra skanks I mentioned earlier. Evidently she were impressed w/his physique, and he was giving her tips on how to squat correctly.

That is, until a buddy of mine – quiet dude, about 5’7″, maybe 165 lbs, and pretty damn strong for his size – asked to “work in” on the squat rack. The metrosexual dude said “sure”…only to watch my buddy walk into the rack, and instead of doing squats, proceed to do a set of pushpresses with the weight the other dude was squatting with.

Ouch.

I had to laugh, and my buddy walked to me just grinning from ear to ear. LMAO. All of a sudden, the girl wasn’t too interested in what ole’ boy had to say anymore.

Moral of the story – I don’t care what your goals are…looking like Tarzan and playing like Jane won’t *ever* get you there. So why even risk it?

Get a proper workout like Body Armor instead, and not only look good…but perform good, too.

An “Incredible Hulk” Workout?

Written by Wiggy on August 8, 2010 – 3:39 pm -

I dunno about you, but I’ve been an “Incredible Hulk” fan for as long as I can remember. I can still remember watching the TV series on Friday nights as a kid, and just being awed by Lou Ferrigno.

incredible hulk with thor - what a workout they woulda had!Later on, when he and the late Bill Bixby made the for TV movies, even though I was a little older, I still loved watching Lou beat the hell outta crap, and toss bad guys around like rag dolls. Hell, being that I was a little older, and more into working out now, I might’ve even liked the movies *more* b/c I could appreciate how much work Big Louie had put into his physique.

(And is it just me, or am I the only one who though Banner was CRAZY for trying to ‘cure’ himself? I dunno about you, but if I could turn into a big green dude that could smash his way through anything, you think I’d be trying to ‘cure’ myself? NO WAY! Hell, I’d was busting my ass to turn myself *into* that kinda guy! And am I also the only one who thought if it’d really turn you into the Hulk, that a little gamma radiation might not be *that bad*…hahaha)

Not sure why the Hulk always resonated w/me – probably b/c I just like the idea of being big, stronger than anybody else, and being able to defend myself and those I cared for. (And who doesn’t wanna be able to clobber a bad guy like it’s nothing?)

Right about here is where I’m supposed to tell you how much of an influence Big Louie and the Hulk were in me wanting to originally get big and strong, and stuff, right? Well, I’m sure y’all have heard that story plenty of times before from tons of people, so I won’t waste your time.

Anyway, the other day I saw a trailer for the upcoming “Avengers” movie had been released online, and checked it out, along w/some of the stuff about how Edward Norton had been replaced as Bruce Banner in the film. Which is a shame, b/c “The Incredible Hulk” movie he did was friggin’ AWESOME and he was great in it.

(We’ll just pretend Ang Lee’s Hulk movie never happened, Ok? Thanks.)

So, being the fanboy I am, I pulled out my “Incredible Hulk” blu-ray out and watched it again the other day. What an awesome movie.

Last night, I was going through a bunch of the extras, and heard the craziest thing…

They were talking to the dudes that did the cgi for the Hulk, and they were talking about creating him – what he was to look like, the kind of stature he was to have, what kinda physique he should have, etc.

Now, you’d *think* that since the Hulk was supposed to be this giant brute of a monster, and even since how the Hulk was introduced to millions of people by a bodybuilder, that the look of a bodybuilder would have been what they went after…esp w/the look of today’s pros. These dudes are like mutants themselves.

But, nope. That wasn’t the case.

They said they wanted a creature that looked more like a linebacker. A physique that wasn’t just big, but (more or less) athletic, and not too over the top. They still wanted something people could identify with. So, they basically just took what they thought a  physique of a strong, powerful, athletic, linebacker kinda build be, and just up-sized it.

How funny is it that the Hulk is supposed to be this monster, this brute, this rage filled strength machine…he’s supposed to be all things muscle…

incredible hulk workout graphic…yet the look of a pro-bodybuilder didn’t fit the bill.

So, when you’re looking to add muscle, improve your physique, gain muscle mass, and “get swole”…why would you look to what bodybuilders do?

Why not go after the kinda physique that just screams strength and power, athleticism and ability, size and muscularity?

You know…the kinda physique you can build with “Body Armor”.

Hell…it’s even what the computer nerds designing cgi for the know looks good and is what you wanna look like.

=>GO HERE and find the workout that can turn you into your own personal Hulk

Now…who knows where I can get some gamma radiation…you know…just “in case”… ;-)

Good For Getting Lean?

Written by Wiggy on August 6, 2010 – 3:31 pm -

Got a pretty good question via email today, and figured I’d share it w/y’all.

Basically, it went like this – a guy had just recently got my new muscle building programs, and wanted to know if they’d still be Ok to use as he was trying to cut some bodyfat and “lean out”. His concern was that when trying to lose, a program w/a little higher volume can be kinda tough to keep up with and recover from.

In the end, he wanted know if Body Armor was a program that he could still go on while still trying to lose bodyfat.

The simple answer to this is – yes.

We all know that to lose bodyfat, you have to burn up more calories than you take in. You have to have a what’s called a ‘caloric deficit’.

Now, to do that, you can go one of two routes:

1 – the more traditional route is to simply eat less and/or better, thereby taking in fewer calories

2 – you could also keep your caloric intake the same and just work more (given that you eat mostly clean, that is…trying to outwork downing a box of Twinkies everyday – lol)

When it comes to being in a caloric deficit, all that matters is that you’re burning up more calories than you’re taking in.

Think about that for a minute – you could theoretically eat *more* than you usually do. As long as you increase your activity level by a commensurate amount.

(In fact, this is the kinda thing nutrition guru John Berardi advocates with his “G-flux” programs – eating more and working even more than that…leads to building muscle while reducing bodyfat percentage.)

And of course, don’t forget that if you wanted to lean out and are in a caloric deficit, it’s only smart to do some heavy weight training (like is in Body Armor) to ensure that your body doesn’t turn on itself and start burning muscle for energy instead of fat stores.

So, where does that get us?

Body Armor is a program that is not only kickass for:

-building muscle
-increasing strength
-becoming more powerful
-improving your physique

But it’s also kickass (esp w/the intense conditioning that’s involved!) losing bodyfat while do all of the above.

Sounds like a cool combination, to me.

I’m Such a ‘rah-tard’…

Written by Wiggy on August 3, 2010 – 1:02 pm -

I’m a ‘rah-tard’. (<–random reference to the movie “The Hangover” – lol)

Ok, I’m just gonna lay it out for you straight – I screwed up. Or my website screwed up. Or my newsletter service screwed up. Or maybe all 3…I dunno.

Whatever it was, the newsletter opt-in form for my new website -  BodyArmorWorkout.com – completely FUBAR’ed itself at some point between when I tested it out, and when the website went “live”.

See, you had the chance to get three free sample workouts, taken directly from my new muscle building workouts, “Body Armor”. But for some unknown reason, when everything was said & done, the opt-in form was dumping people over into the freebie list for my cardio workout.

????? Damn intraweb technogoofs.

Anyway, I just wanted to say it’s now fixed, so if you’d still like to pick up three free workouts out of Body Armor, then head on over and grab ‘em.

=>get three free workouts here

Oh – and by the way, I got another testimonial today…this time via Facebook, and all the way from Australia:

“Matt, the Body Armor workouts are just the thing I needed to take me to my next natural bodybuilding comp in 6 weeks time. At 52 yrs old, I decided to have a go at something I always wanted to do – it’s been hard work, but well worth it. The Body Armor workouts are tough, but well designed and my wife Colleen has just decided that she is going to have a go at the program, as she also competes in 6 weeks time…..thanks mate…today is Day 2 of week 2, am feeling yesterday’s workout bigtime… :)
-Mick Cutts
Australia

Mick, you’re a true inspiration, and are in better shape than – not to mention *outwork* guys half your age! I’m glad Body Armor is working so well for you, and know it will Colleen, too! Keep on kicking ass, and showing all the “young bucks” how to do it!

That’s it for today, gang – more soon.

(Oh, and don’t forget to go get your three free workouts…maybe if you work at it, you’ll be able to keep up w/Mick! ;-)

Let the Witch-Hunts Begin!!

Written by Wiggy on August 2, 2010 – 5:05 pm -

Ok, I’m about to say something that’s gonna get a bunch of people all up in arms. Whatever…I don’t care.

You know how most people in the strength & conditioning industry just hate & loathe bodybuilding?

Well, they’re mostly idiots. Not to mention wrong. In fact, bodybuilding doesn’t suck nearly as bad as many of the ‘gurus’ out there try to tell you it does.

Oh yeah…that’s gonna make some people take notice. I bet busy internet bloggers and forum posters are already talking smack about me. Meh…who cares.

Now, do I approve of the spectacle that professional bodybuilding has become – esp in the past decade?

HELL NO.

But in and of itself, there is *nothing* wrong with bodybuilding, nor is there anything wrong with wanting to do some bodybuilding oriented training. Hell, at some point or another, about everybody wants to use a good set of muscle building programs to put some size on.

And that’s cool.

The problem comes in when:

1 – you care *only* about what you look like, thereby leaving all performance by the wayside (which is stupid – what’s the point? The old saying “Looks like Tarzan, Plays like Jane” comes to mind…)

2 – you go completely overboard with your workouts. I don’t care what you read in the latest magazine, you don’t need these massively long, split-bodypart training programs that take 2-3 hours to do.

What’s that? It worked for Arnold, Louie, Franco, and the rest. Well…that’s true.

Quick newsflash though, bub – you ain’t Arnold, Louie, or Franco. (Hate to have to tell you that.)

Instead, why don’t you use a basic program centered around sound principles designed to increase strength and power. Add in work for speed and explosiveness. Round it all out with assistance work that’s designed to not only balance everything out, but put on some extra muscle mass, too.

Then, when you’re done, toss in some intense conditioning for good measure. Not too much…but…you know…enough to keep you in shape.

Or in other words…just use “Body Armor”. ;-)
