You’re a UFC Fan, Right?

Written by Wiggy on July 20, 2010 – 4:32 pm -

It’s no secret that the UFC (and MMA in general) is one of the fastest growing sports – and forms of entertainment in general – in the world.

It’s fast-paced, highly competitive, action-packed, and almost *anything* can happen at *any* time.

I think one of the big allures (outside of two guys just knockin’ the hell outta each other) to MMA is that it’s just so physically demanding. A UFC workout has gotta give you:

-supreme strength to dominate your opponent

-lightning-quick speed for takedowns and sprawls

-insane power for those KO strikes (punches, kicks, and knees)

-conditioning like no other sport on the planet (we’ve all seen how many former NFL players have gassed out in short order in just sparring and training)

Who wouldn’t be impressed w/athletes that have all that?

You ever wonder how an MMAist should train to have that strength, speed, wind, endurance, power, work capacity, conditioning, and more?

Strong + Fast + Work

Written by Wiggy on July 19, 2010 – 3:49 pm -

Been spending a while talking about power, and how to train for it (as well as why some of the ‘traditional’ methods don’t work that well).

I’ve been talking about complexes and circuit training some lately, but I wanna get into something specific today – a certain kinda complex I *really* like.

I call them “Power Complexes”.

(Simple enough name, huh? LOL)

Complexes are cool, but you’re sometimes limited in just what exercises you can do, simply b/c you end up limited by how much weight you can do, and/or how much equipment you can tie up / occupy at once.

Deadlifts work great with Power Complexes.I mean, I could tell you to do bench presses, deadlifts, clean & presses, and back squats all in the same complex for the most weight you could crank out six reps with, but let’s face it – it’s gonna be tough – esp in a commercial gym – to be able to tie up a bench, squat rack, and two other bars just to do those four exercises.

Actually, that’s why I like designing most kinds of complexes with dumbbells and the like only, as it’s a lot less equipment intensive.

However, as awesome as DB-only type complexes are, you’re still only gonna be able to lift *so* much weight. And there will be the time that you need to just move some big weights around.

But how do you do it w/o needing a bunch of equipment? And how do you combine super-heavy training (which usually has to be done slower – and therefore not good for power) with explosive training (which *is* good for power)?

Simple – do what I call “Power Complexes”. You simply just pair up two exercises – one heavy movement with one explosive movement. The heavy movement will be done with a barbell, heavy DBs, sandbag, or whatever. Do this for 5-6 reps.

Then do a lighter, very explosive movement – say a jump of some kind or maybe DB swings – for more reps…say 10-15.Different kinds of jumps are great in power complexes.

The key here is to not pair up certain types of exercises, or else you end up hurting your performance, and end up getting much less than optimal results.

And if you stack them correctly, Power Complexes can be used to *drastically* increase your work capacity as well as keep your conditioning at crazy levels…not just for your wind, but for your power, strength-endurance, muscular conditioning, and a ton more.

(In fact, this is the reason why Power Complexes are such a big part of the latter stages of the “Championship Edition 2.0″ MMA Workout.)

Try them out in your next workout – lemme know what you think.

PS – I’m gonna talk a little more about this in the next day or so, but remember a few days ago, I let y’all know about Adam Linkenauger and his Vertical Jump videos? Well, he’s got a new VJ program I’ve been looking at, and VJ is your thing, you *really* should give it a look. More info soon.

How Much Do Ya Need?

Written by Wiggy on July 18, 2010 – 9:21 pm -

Was just answering some email, and got a question that was so good, that I knew I had to put it into a blog post for y’all.

Basically, the guy was asking me about my “Working Class Cardio Workout”, and weather or not he, being an “Average Joe”, needed to be in great shape. He mentioned that a lot of the feedback he’s seen on my sites were from pro fighters, athletes, law enforcement and military, and the like.

But, does the regular joe (and jane!) have to be in great shape, too? Just how much did you ‘have’ to have? (He had mentioned doing my old ‘Singles & Doubles’ programs, and that they had already given him good very conditioning – did he need the extra conditioning that ‘WCC’ would provide?)

Now, my answer is that I can’t answer that one for you…only you can do that. What kinda shape do you wanna be in? Do you wanna focus more on max strength? Max power? Max endurance? Purely looking good?

That’s all up to you.

However, the one thing that I told him about – and the thing I wanted to get across to y’all, is that I believe in having a high standard of attainable fitness…but something that is consistent and that you can maintain for a long time.

See, there are PLENTY of programs out there that will help ‘peak’ you. They’ll help you get to ‘peak’ strength, ‘peak’ condition, ‘peak’ levels of low bodyfat, etc.

Now, while all those types of programs are well and good (esp if you’re preparing for a competition of some sort), for the most part, I think they miss the mark for the Average Joe.

See, we (and I say ‘we’ b/c I like to think of myself as an ‘Average Joe’, too) aren’t training for anything in particular. We just train for life. Depending on how physical of a job you might have to make your income, the most strenuous thing you might endure one day is carrying in the groceries. Another day, maybe helping a friend move. The day after that, maybe it’s just a game of ball w/your buddies.

But what if the unforseen crazy circumstance comes up? God forbid, but say an emergency comes up, and it somehow depends on you being in shape? Say grabbing a kid outta a busy street, chasing down that crook who just tried to snatch your wife/girlfriend’s purse, or pushing somebody’s stalled car off the road.

Are you ready for anything – and I mean *anything* – like that?

Here’s the thing – you never know when this kinda thing is gonna happen, and you’re gonna have to depend on being strong, powerful, in condition, etc. Hopefully, you’ll never have to…I don’t wanna see anybody in that kinda dire situation. (But we both know it’s gonna eventually happen at some point – it happens to everybody.)

Ask yourself this – if it were to happen today, would you be physically ready?

If so, then awesome – keep kicking ass. But if not, then are you at least on your way? And if you’re not on your way, well…I’m not gonna tell you what to do, but it’s just something you might wanna think about.

And that’s why I don’t like programs that ‘peak’ you – I’m all about the the kinda overall fitness that you can maintain and be able to perform at all the time…not just when you’re in tip-top condition – which *nobody* can maintain.

(FWIW…these are the kinda things I think about and when I design programs like “Working Class Cardio” – what can not only get you in great shape, but keep you there?)

Just something to think about…and hopefully will never have to encounter.

Why Power Alone Ain’t Enough

Written by Wiggy on July 16, 2010 – 3:23 pm -

The topic lately has been power – why I don’t like ‘traditional’ methods of power training, exercises I *do* like, and more.

But there’s a problem.

Power is all well and good – in fact, it’s about as awesome of a physical quality as you can get. It’s a step up from strength, and much more beneficial that speed by itself.

BUT…

(I tend to have “BUT” in capital letters in my emails a lot when I’m talking about how great something is, huh? LOL @ me. Anyway…)

Here’s the thing – power by itself is all well and good. But I don’t care if you’re talking about sports, athletics, law enforcement, or your daily “honey-do” list, anytime that exerting power is beneficial to you, RARE is the time that you’ll only have to do it once.

Also rare is the occasion where you’ll have to exert some kinda power, have a long rest, then have to exert it again.

So what does this mean?

This means you better have some kinda power-based conditioning in your program. You’d better be able to exert that power, rest very little (or not at all), and then do it again. And again. And again. And again.

Being super-powerful is ultra awesome. But, if your conditioning sucks so bad that you completely peter out after one or two attempts at (insert activity here), then what good is it?

You know?

That’s a big reason why I’m big on circuit training and complexes:

-use power-based exercises where you can move a lot of weight

-use dumbbells, medicine balls, explosive bodyweight movements so you can train anywhere

-keep form tight

-rest very little

-go from one exercise to another so while one bodypart rests, another is working…and your heart & lungs never get a break

(All this is pretty awesome for cardio & conditioning, too – hence it being such a big part of the “Working Class Cardio Workout”)

Pretty damn awesome ‘bang’ for your training ‘buck’ if you ask me.

Have a kickass weekend.
